Lyrics

  • Tonight I hope
  • through the telescope you setup in your lawn
  • The comet won't be gone
  • Bring the focus clear
  • Through the atmosphere I held my breath and prayed
  • and watched it slip away
  • When will I see the light again?
  • And who, and who will we be then?
  • What do comets dream
  • as the Earth recedes and fades away to black
  • In a million years
  • should I reappear
  • please let me be a star
  • Another shooting star
  • When will I see the light again?
  • And who, and who will we be then?
  • In another chair in another lawn
  • Playing dominoes until the daylight's gone
  • And we'll wait around 'til the clouds clear up
  • Drinking red wine out of coffee cups
  • And then maybe there's a family there
  • maybe with my nose, maybe with your hair
  • And we'd wait up 'til we see the light
  • And I promised them it would come
  • When will I see the light again?
  • And who, and who will we be then?

Lyrics

  • The Duke arrives to a quiet bar
  • Echo Park
  • The patrons pretend not to care
  • One or two can't stifle a stare
  • He smells a bit like the highways do
  • Diesel fumes
  • Under a layer of sweat
  • Cocks his head at me and he says
      • I rode in through the valley, on a Golden Palomino
      • Over the 405, I saw the light appear
      • I just wanted to see Evelyn again
      • A crowd assembles around the Duke
      • a drunk horseshoe
      • Legs crossed indian style
      • Marion can't stifle a smile
      • He looks around at the skinny jeans
      • cell phone screens
      • I'm speaking for everyone
      • when I ask him what it's like where he's from
      • It never rains no seasons change
      • It's L.A. with no freeways
      • But I missed the spilled champagne, the burnt cocaine
      • and I
      • I just wanted to see Evelyn again
      • As it gets to be closing time
      • John unwinds
      • the morning's starting to dawn
      • Tries his best to stifle a yawn
      • He looks around at the breaking sky
      • heaves a sigh
      • looks back at me and he smiles
      • finally gives some decent advice
      • When you're gone nobody will remember all your memories
      • As he walks out the door he mumbles towards the floor
      • I just wanted to see Evelyn again
      • Nothing left of the man I called my friend
      • Nothing left of the people we were then

  • You know that if you count the passing poles
  • At 154, I'm sure, we'll be at your mom's
  • We stalled a couple miles from the town
  • I went to thumb a semi down
  • Waited 'round, no one ever came
  • Waiting til the morning in my parents grand marquis
  • Looking in the mirror at you sleeping on the seat
  • Tonight, I think i'll wait up for the moon
  • We met a couple years too soon
  • And we knew
  • That's the hardest part
  • Waiting til the morning in my parents grand marquis
  • Looking in the mirror at you sleeping on the seat
  • And I tried and I tried and I tried and I tried
  • And I tried and I tried and I tried and I tried
  • Somewhere beneath this highway's fading night
  • I look to find each dimming light
  • Tonight, maybe they won't fade
  • Waiting til the morning in my parents grand marquis
  • Looking in the mirror at you sleeping on the seat

Lyrics

  • The ghost on Sunset Boulevard
  • was Cecil B. Demille
  • Lit from afar by Hollywood stars
  • and wandering toward the Palisades
  • I stopped my car and asked him if
  • he needed transportation
  • Said I’m not going far but I’m tired and it’s dark
  • Could you take me to the beach?
  • Mr. Demille, sir take a seat
  • but why are you walking towards the sea?
  • I gotta see my stars
  • Oh, oh, Mr. Magazine
  • put me on your cinema screen
  • I've seen all your videos
  • and I'm ready for my scene
  • We pulled off by the ocean and
  • he wandered towards the shoreline
  • I thought it was strange when he called out my name
  • and asked me could I come along
  • But stranger still the coast at night
  • was lit up for a movie
  • Cecil was there in a director’s chair
  • holding a silver megaphone
  • Marlon Brando, Cary Grant
  • Bette Davis, Ray Milland
  • waiting for their cue
  • Oh, oh, Mr. Magazine
  • put me on your cinema screen
  • I've seen all your videos
  • and I'm ready for my scene
  • As the sun set on Malibu
  • we heard the clapboard ring
  • Charlie Heston raised his hands
  • and the ocean split
  • and all of them walked in
  • Oh, oh, Mr. Magazine
  • put me on your cinema screen
  • I've seen all your videos
  • and I'm ready for my scene

Lyrics

  • Steven we were born we were born in the city
  • Made new 22 ready for everything
  • Steven I remember us as princes of the runaways
  • When the storm clouds rolled through the Capitol City
  • like blood gray black waves
  • barreling towards some beach
  • We'd drag the couch to the front porch
  • we'd stay we swore
  • til the rain washed Washington away
  • I knew we'd live forever
  • Still don't know who we're going to be
  • or the things we'll lose or the things that we'll free
  • but I think of you and I hope that you think of me
  • we were wildflowers blooming through a crack in the road
  • we were bonfires waiting for a chance to explode
  • we were pilgrims looking for the places to go home to
  • Everything will change Everything will change
  • Watched the ground wash away
  • and a car wash away
  • and I thought we should go inside
  • but you thought we should stay
  • Let the rain come down
  • Let the rain come down
  • Let is make a sound like a million crashing trains
  • I knew we'd live forever
  • Still don't know who we're going to be
  • or the things we'll lose or the things that we'll free
  • but I think of you and I hope that you think of me
  • we were wildflowers blooming through a crack in the road

Lyrics

  • Dreamed of St. Anthony
  • Out on my street
  • Stoned in a taxicab
  • waiting for me
  • He'd been crying and he tried to speak
  • And I heard just the quietest sound
  • Said he'd lost everything
  • that he had found
  • Maybe tonight, Maybe tonight
  • there are a million things we'll find
  • So Anthony
  • take the wheel and drive
  • Somewhere something beautiful is waiting to be seen
  • Come with me and wander through my dream
  • Drove to my factory
  • filled with old things
  • piled up newspaper
  • and old mattress springs
  • He smiled, remembering
  • and whispered to me
  • I forgot the symphony
  • of thrown away things
  • Maybe tonight, Maybe tonight
  • there are a million things we'll find
  • So Anthony
  • take the wheel and drive
  • Somewhere something beautiful is waiting to be seen
  • Come with me and wander through my dream

  • Someday baby
  • I'll find you standing there
  • in my mother's lawn, with a duffel bag, and flowers in your hair
  • You'll say let's take tonight
  • Drive to Baton Rouge
  • We could leave this town and wake up tomorrow and be somewhere new
  • And you promised someday we
  • would be the people we should be
  • tonight
  • You've got a fire in your eyes
  • That I will follow through the night
  • Baby we will be all right
  • You're my compass rose
  • You're my gasoline
  • You're the way you feel the ocean when you fall asleep
  • I'll be the steering wheel
  • I'll be the song you know
  • crackling through the wires of your radio
  • And you promised someday we
  • would be the people we should be
  • tonight
  • You've got a fire in your eyes
  • That I will follow through the night
  • Baby we will be all right
  • Every traffic light I'd sit and wait
  • for the signal to accelerate
  • But baby we can be
  • the people we should be
  • tonight
  • You've got a fire in your eyes
  • That I will follow through the night
  • Baby we will be all right

  • I had the funniest dream of you
  • We met on Roosevelt Avenue
  • And I finally saw your face again
  • I misremembered so many things
  • I thought your eyes were a darker green
  • And I forgot the freckle on your cheek
  • Cos' every time I thought of you
  • I forgot a piece I thought I knew
  • The hole in my heart was shaped like you
  • I filled it with love and superglue
  • I grew a garden inside your lungs
  • and though it filled you with oxygen
  • Now I understand you couldn't breathe
  • Cos' every time I thought of you
  • I forgot a piece I thought I knew
  • The hole in my heart was shaped like you
  • I filled it with love and superglue
  • And as you started to fade
  • I realized
  • Most dreams are realer than
  • what you've memorized
  • And when I woke alone
  • I could taste your kiss
  • as I drifted back to sleep
  • Cos' every time I thought of you

  • Mary walk with me
  • Mary give your burden
  • Remember Galilee's always your homeland
  • And you'll be wild and free
  • And you'll be pure and golden
  • And you'll be gasoline thrown on a fire
  • Oh how the diamonds shine from the light you gave
  • Oh how the oceans rise from the tears you made
  • And the sun will rise
  • The sun will rise upon another day
  • I watched a red balloon
  • Against a bruised horizon
  • And I thought of you as you were leaving
  • And how the brightest light
  • Will cast the darkest shadows
  • Mary brave the night until tomorrow
  • Oh how the diamonds shine from the light you gave

Lyrics

  • I want a man like a dictionary
  • With words as skin,
  • with nouns and adjectives as his limbs
  • So when he runs he forms perfect sentences
  • My man’s not perfect, he’s decoration
  • He teaches physical education
  • Instead of sportcoats,
  • he wears a whistle around his forearm
  • But every night I dream of Hugo, Kant of Dostoevsky
  • In my skin my blood reads articles and prepositions
  • I woke up dreaming, satiated
  • For TS Eliot had kissed my shoulderblade
  • I lied silent, alone with thoughts
  • about what he’s dreaming
  • I want him lost in Milton’s paradise
  • Maya Angelou’s perfect rhythm,
  • or Billy Collins
  • Just not some sweaty school gymnasium
  • But every night I dream of Vonnegut of Herman Melville
  • In my skin my blood bleeds articles and prepositions
  • Will he notice how my words combine like silent pictures
  • Or will he just say good night?
  • He woke up shaking his lips parentheses
  • Part to speak his evening’s dreaming
  • I lied there silent
  • alone in trembling expectation
  • He said his dreams were desecrated
  • the ‘49ers beat the Patriots
  • I just kissed him, rubbed his shoulders,
  • and drifted back to sleep
  • If every night my dreams seem callous to you, please remember:
  • my bed’s a library, just fall asleep and let me dream them

Notes

"Green" is the third and final record of our Colors triptych - preceded by the first, chamber pop ("Blue"), and the second, country/shoegaze ("Red").

We made "Green" after a long tour of Germany - 60 dates - where we hardened into a tight live band. "Green" reflects that assurance, and confidence. It's populated by the ghosts that trickle through our cities. It resonates with geography - California and New York and Florida.
